Our Tutoring Program is designed to foster the academic, social and emotional growth of students impacted by homelessness and poverty. We match volunteers with a student or group of students to help with homework and school projects. Since our founding in 2004, more than 4,700 students from pre-K through high school have received academic, social and emotional support from our caring volunteer tutors. Our goal is to instill confidence annd foster a love for learning!
Volunteer Tutors come from a variety of backgrounds and range in age from young adults to retirees. No formal teaching experience is necessary, just the heart to help a child learn, grow and have fun!
Tutors are paired with a student or small group of students
(Pre-K – 12) and meet either once or twice a week for an hour-long session.
In addition to homework help and school projects, tutors have access to enrichment activities such as STEAM kits, arts and crafts and games. For older students, tutors help with GED and HiSET exam preparation.
The tutoring calendar follows the public school year and runs from October through June. Sessions take place during early evening hours from Monday – Thursday. We also offer summer learning during July and August.
We provide free training and professional development workshops for tutors throughout the year. A School on Wheels Site Coordinator oversees the session and are alway available for help.
Students interested in tutoring who are under 18 may do so with the written consent of a parent or guardian. Those under 16 may tutor with a parent or guardian present at all times.
Reliability is important. You must be able to commit to at least a full academic semester and provide a child with much-needed consistency.

A CORI will then be conducted as part of our application process.
You will be invited to attend an online or in-person tutor training session.
We will work with you to determine your site location and introduce you to your Tutor Site Coordinator.
Your Site Coordinator will guide you through the initial sessions and be available throughout all of your volunteer sessions with School on Wheels.

In the case of inclement weather, we automatically will cancel tutoring when schools are closed in the towns where our sites are located. We may also choose to cancel tutoring if we feel that it is not safe or reasonable to ask tutors to come in.
