Volunteer Appreciation Dinner 2026

Our 2026 Volunteer Appreciation Day was inspired by the amsonia flower, symbolizing strength, resilience, and endurance. The evening’s theme was beautifully illustrated by Yiner Xu of Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

We are so pleased to present:

Champion for Our Kids:  Emily Jackson
For eight years, Emily Jackson and her team from Pondville Correctional Center have been unwavering supporters, delivering school supplies, supporting our Community Room, and helping thousands of students start the school year strong.  Understanding the role education plays in reducing recidivism, Emily steps in to support our mentoring students when needed.

Donna Dias Memorial Tutor of the Year: David Ness
This year, we proudly renamed our Tutor of the Year Award in honor of Donna Dias, whose compassion, dedication, and belief in every child left a lasting legacy among all who knew her. Donna’s sons, Alan and Jordan, joined us to commemorate the heartwarming occasion and accept a keepsake in her name.

David Hess began tutoring with School on Wheels after retiring in 2010. He became increasingly involved in our mission for the following 16 years.  David began in Brockton and soon became the go-to person to help out at any of our tutoring sites.  “He supported me and my academic challenges from middle school through high school,” said former student Leyca. “He always brought math and computer science to an understandable level so I actually understood it,” she added.

Mentor of the Year: Nancy Guerland
Since 2023, Nancy has provided exceptional guidance and encouragement to her mentee, Dayanie, helping build confidence, overcome challenges, and achieve goals.

Company Caring for Kids: Bluestone Bank
A decade-long partner and champion for local students, Bluestone Bank has contributed more than $25,000, supported our backpack program, collected supplies, and opened doors throughout the community.

Special Recognition: Kathy Godbout & Alice Arena
Since 2014, Kathy and Alice have kept the fun rolling through annual game drives with the Weymouth Democratic Action Committee, helping students connect, learn, and play. Thanks for always keeping us in the game!

Special Recognition: Sonia Bachand, CrossFit Bridgewater
For nearly a decade, Sonia and her team have turned generosity into action. From their annual Giving Tree to furnishing apartments for students in need, they never miss a chance to help our students and bring wishes to life.

Special Recognition: Jerry Mekler
Thank you, Jerry, for your wit and practical jokes (we did pull off this surprise, though) and for your generosity, and commitment to our mission. Whether driving the van for pick up or delivery (yes, even to Boston), helping with inventory and all the “heavy lifting,” your support continues to make a meaningful difference behind the scenes – but front and center with us!

To all of our volunteers, mentors, tutors, and community partners, thank you for helping our students grow, blossom, and succeed with strength, resilience and endurance.
