Shanteria Crawford: A Mentoring Student Comes Full Circle to Give Back

By Charlotte Hunnewell, Marketing Intern

— In a recent interview with Shanteria Crawford, a pivotal figure at School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA), I gained insight into her remarkable journey – from a student seeking support to a dedicated advocate for educational opportunity for children and youth impacted by homelessness.

Shanteria’s connection with SOWMA began at community college, where an advisor introduced her to SOWMA’s Bridge Mentoring program. She was excited about the program and School on Wheels’ support for her academic future. She was initially skeptical about a mentor, fearing the person wouldn’t have time for her and would eventually “forget her name.” However, her mentor’s support and friendship surprised and proved her wrong. Not only did her mentor assist her in transferring from community college to Bridgewater State University, but she remained a significant presence in Shanteria’s life, even helping her find her wedding dress!

Graduating in 2021, Shanteria didn’t just stop after receiving help from SOWMA and her mentor; she paid it forward. She interned at SOWMA during her last year of college, where she witnessed firsthand the impact a dedicated tutor or mentor provides a student. Amidst the pandemic, she visited shelters, offering crucial academic and emotional support, and ensuring the children felt cared for and motivated despite their challenging circumstances.

Now, Shanteria serves as a Site Coordinator, where she greets children at various locations—shelters, hotels, libraries, and even outdoors. Her daily routine includes educational activities like reading and math, but she goes beyond academics. Shanteria incorporates exercises, fun activities, and emotional support sessions, emphasizing social-emotional learning, meditation, and yoga. For her, School on Wheels isn’t just about education; it’s about nurturing resilient children.

Reflecting on her journey, Shanteria expresses profound gratitude for School on Wheels. As she was introduced to the organization when she needed support the most, she now passionately contributes to their mission. She believes in their objective to make a real difference in the lives of students, helping them navigate the challenges they face and empowering them through education.

Shanteria Crawford’s story exemplifies the power of mentorship and community support. From a student uncertain about her future to a leader advocating for homeless children, her journey with School on Wheels showcases the transformative impact of education.
