More than 24,000 students enrolled in Massachusetts public schools are identified as homeless.

Beginning with the Fall, 2020 academic year, our tutoring program will resume remotely.  We are so grateful for our volunteer tutors, who continue to provide academic, social and emotional support to students online.

TUTOR Requirements AT A GLANCE

Volunteer Tutors come from a variety of backgrounds and range in age from young adults to retirees.

Tutors are paired with one student (K - 12) and meet for one or two hourly sessions each week.

The tutoring calendar follows the public school year and runs during early evening hours from Monday - Thursday.

We provide free training and educational workshops throughout the year.

Each of our 18 tutoring site locations is managed by a SOWMA Site Coordinator, who oversees the tutoring sessions.

Volunteers must be 18-years-old to tutor independently; those ages 14 - 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

  • Tutors must fill out an online application and complete an orientation and training.

  • Once trained, you will be matched with a student at a site located in one the following communities:  Brockton, Middleboro, Dorchester, Taunton, Plymouth/Kingston, Norwell, Fall River, New Bedford, Attleboro, Weymouth and Stoughton.

We ask volunteer tutors to commit to a minimum of one term (see term dates below).

It is important that tutors honor their time commitment (one hour a week for at least a full term) so that students can be assured of reliable and consistent support.

                                      TERM ONE:   SEPTEMBER - DECEMBER
                                      TERM TWO:  JANUARY - JUNE
