New Sites = More Kids for SOWMA

Fall is always an exciting time at School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA), but especially this year as we opened four new tutoring sites, expanded to two new communities, and watched our number of students grow by 80 children. Last year at this time we had 120 students in kindergarten – grade 12 registered for our tutoring program; this year we have more than 200.

Our new Brockton sites are at the Old Colony YMCA Bolton Place family shelter and a brand new SOWMA Learning Center located in the Crescent Credit Union Training Center, downtown Brockton. SOWMA has also expanded into Weymouth and Randolph to meet the increasing needs of homeless families in those communities. SOWMA has 12 program sites in six communities (Brockton, New Bedford, Norwell, Randolph, Stoughton and Weymouth).

Children experiencing homelessness are often required to move several times during a school year. Having a caring adult role model to meet with every week provides stability for these kids and their education. Regardless of where or how many times a family moves, students can continue to attend weekly tutoring sessions with SOWMA and develop a positive, one-on-one mentor relationship with the same tutor. “The consistency SOWMA offers is key to our students’ educational success,” says Jennifer Gold, School on Wheels Education Director. “We know that the customized services these children receive from their tutors make a difference to them, emotionally.”
