Tutor-Student Bond is Special

Tutor Judy Levitt and student Rick-Stephane began their School on Wheels success story in July. Levitt began to tutor Rick-Stephane as soon as she joined School on Wheels. He is an eight-year-old third-grader with a zest for life and learning, who moved here from Haiti with his family following the 2010 earthquake.

Levitt explains that the reason her tutoring experience has been so rewarding thus far, is because Rick-Stephane is so bright and eager to learn, and challenges her to keep him challenged.

Because English is Rick-Stephane's second language, Levitt wanted to strengthen his language skills by supplementing his lessons with higher-level vocabulary words. It's obvious that his parents are so invested in his education, because he already knew many of the words she presented to him. She says, “He keeps me on my toes. He’s so excited and fired up about everything we do!” This was evident when, during a recent tutoring session Rick-Stephane was thrilled to report, “You know what?? Tomorrow, we start multiplication!” He wanted to be sure he was well prepared for it.

Levitt is excited to continue to tutor Rick-Stephane for as long as she can. She feels that with the continued support of School on Wheels and his parents, he has a magnificent future ahead of him, and she is “looking forward to a long-term adventure” together.
