Puppets Teach About Germs

The students in our programs recently put on a puppet show all about germs and staying clean. We had read books at different reading levels about microscopes, germs, and being clean.  Then, the students wrote their lines for the show based on the readings.  We had soap, wash cloths, bubbles, toothbrushes and tissues for props.  At the end we sang the song "Brush your Teeth" by Raffi.  The students especially loved looking through the microscope at leaves, onions, etc.  The puppet show was a fun way to teach students about germs.
This unit was part of our May enrichment, where students were able to participate in hands-on lessons about bacteria/germs, the concept of microscopic organisms, good hygiene, why we sneeze and how to fight germs.  The group consisted of a kindergartner, three first graders, a second grader, a third grader and a sixth grader.  The lessons included age and reading level appropriate reading and writing, and the puppet show performance included props and a song with direction by the older student.
