Helping "Stuff-the-Bus"

GOAL - Helping 1,000 Kids have a New Backpack to Start the School Year!

Over 300 backpacks were collected on Saturday June 14th to kick off our “Stuff the Bus” initiative that will help us reach our goal to ensure that 1,000 children impacted by homelessness have new backpacks on the first day of school. While most students are counting down the days until school is out, the Gold kids are counting the number of backpacks needed to reach their goal of helping 1,000 kids.

In honor of School on Wheels 10th birthday, Jenn Gold, our new Education Director, and her children Michael, who will enter 6th grade and Victoria, who will enter 8th grade at Easton Middle School in the fall, decided to spend their summer focused on helping other kids.

The Gold family kicked off their “Stuff the Bus” campaign in the Easton schools in early June, distributing flyers to teachers and students and asking for support for the project. On Saturday, June 14, Michael and Victoria Gold spent the morning on a school bus organizing more than 300 new backpacks donated by the schools, friends and family. They collected even more backpacks from people who were kind enough to stop by to help fill the Lucini Bus that was waiting at the Easton Middle School. Everyone who visited the bus that day expressed how happy they were to help a student in our community who has been impacted by homelessness. Sadly there are 420 families living in shelter on the South Shore, with more than 150 families calling a Brockton motel room their temporary home.

We need your support to reach our goal to collect 1,000 NEW backpacks before 8/20/14. We want every student in our community who is experiencing homelessness to have a fully-stocked backpack to kick off the school year. Backpacks and school supplies can be dropped off at the School on Wheels headquarters located at 790 West Chestnut Street in Brockton. Please note all donations must be new. We want to give a big shout out to David Harman of Polaris Solutions for his generous donation of 30 brand new backpacks and supplies. Thanks to Cheryl Brigante at the Center School of Easton and other members of the community who helped us “Stuff the Bus.” Thank you Easton Middle School for hosting the event and thank you to Ray and Lucini Bus Lines for the donating the awesome bus to help us kick off our 1,000 backpack campaign. Michael and Victoria were thrilled to ride the bus back to School on Wheels to drop off the backpacks with their old bus driver Ray! Michael said Ray was the BEST bus driver ever!
