School on Wheels is 10 Years Strong

Reflecting back to April 2004, when I first started School on Wheels of Massachusetts out of my home in Easton, I could never have imagined that we would:

• open 22 tutoring sites
• train 1,444 community volunteer tutors
• supply 5,657 backpacks filled with school supplies and books
• provide customized academic services for 1,706 children grades K-12
• and 33 students would enroll in college.

After reading a magazine article in Family Circle about Agnes Stevens the founder of School on Wheels in California, I was motivated to bring the program to Massachusetts in April 2004 and work with students in my own backyard that were experiencing homelessness. As an educator and mother I was devastated to think that there were children who did not have the basic school supplies and resources they needed to be successful in school.

Children who have lost their homes are invisible students in our classrooms, falling further and further behind their peers. Our students are missing huge layers of learning because of multiple moves, frequent absences and the trauma of homelessness. School on Wheels does everything possible to reverse that downward spiral and help children soar in the classroom and dream of a brighter tomorrow.

Our goal is to ensure every child has the stability, the consistency and the personalized support they need to reach their full potential. Our SOWMA community helps us provide services for our kids to be stronger students in the classroom and beyond.  Read more about our kids' success and check out our NECN news clip to see how your support is changing lives.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for investing in our students. Together we will continue to break the cycle of homelessness one child, one education at a time.
