Sana Haque, Resource Specialist & Commonwealth Corps Member

This blog post was submitted by Sana Haque, Resource Specialist & Commonwealth Corps Member

I enjoy serving as the Resource Specialist at School on Wheels of Massachusetts (SOWMA) where I design skill development activities and theme-based projects for our students. My responsibilities pertain to the increased use of the educational resources at SOWMA’s tutoring sites in Massachusetts. The activities I design provide the tutors with suggested activities, following the Common Core and MA State educational standards, which they can work on with their students using the resources available.

I am happy to be serving, learning, and growing at SOWMA as a Commonwealth Corps member. My year of service, as a Commonwealth Corps member under the Massachusetts Service Alliance in the position of Resource Specialist at SOWMA, is going productively and exceptionally well.

I am most excited for the skill development activities; they are designed to help each student build his/her skills in math and ELA, from foundational to advanced skills. Ideally and eventually, all tutor and student pairs will spend 10-15 minutes of each tutoring session working on a skill development activity. Implementation of these activities will allow for an improvement in the student’s report card grades and the scores they receive on the teacher assessments.

Having recently graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, I was looking for a position to serve my community while gaining experience in the field of educational psychology. School on Wheels of Massachusetts gave me the perfect position to utilize, enhance, and increase my skills in the field while serving my community as a Commonwealth Corps Member. Being able to serve local community kids in the state of Massachusetts as a Commonwealth Corps member through SOWMA is a fulfilling and rewarding experience, as it allows me to see how education is applied, utilized, and taught in real life situations through innovation and through alignment with nationwide educational standards. I am excited to continue serving my community while learning, growing, experiencing, and applying what I know to what I do.
